It might be my post-Buffy stress disorder speaking again, but I'm not a fan of protracted old timey flashbacks on TV shows generally. They rarely have the budget to do them properly, and they don't really bring anything new, because nothing can happen in them that hasn't already happened by the show's present day.
Basically, I always just find myself waiting to get back to the "contemporary" plot flow so we can move forward, rather than just shading in blanks that we did just fine without until then anyway.
